“Sumptuous” is the only way to describe the Muttontown Club, not far from the Long Island Expressway on Northern Boulevard in East Norwich, Long Island. The 6,500 Alfred Tull layout is neither deceiving to the eye, nor to the mind, that is, until you get to the greens. From tee to green, the Muttontown Club is a “play it as you see it” course. While there are dog-legs (both left and right), never are you faced with a truly blind shot. While the course has some hilly moments, it is a course that even your out of shape companion can walk — with one of their highly qualified caddies on your bag. Any changes in elevation, are relatively easily calculated when making your club selection.

Only upon arriving on the Muttontown Club greens, does the course reveals some fangs. While most putts break away from the stately brick clubhouse (which is the high point of the club) – some do not. The greens are devilishly fast, and have a deceptive amount of break. Unless you are Ben Crenshaw, Brad Faxon or Dave Pelz, you are certain to have at least 2 or more 3 putts on your scorecard. While their caddies do provide very precise reads (without becoming overbearing), the reads will only work if you can match the proper speed – which is easier said than done.

Straightforward but not simplistic fairways. Tricky greens. You must be asking: Why can you only describe the Muttontown Club as “sumptuous”?

Let’s start with the course.

After changing into your shoes, and hitting your drives, you are struck by how impeccably maintained the course is. The wide fairways (with respectable tree lines) are lush with nary a brown spot or divot. The sand hazards are precisely groomed, and the sand is remarkably consistent from hole to hole. You will not find a blemish on any of the greens. These are the markings of a sumptuous course.

But it is more than the course that is sumptuous. As you drive off the Long Island Expressway on to Northern Boulevard you make turn onto a very long entrance road to a circular driveway and a beautiful red brick Georgian Style Clubhouse befit for second level French aristocrats. Upon arrival, your car is quickly taken by the valet, and your clubs are quickly brought to their driving range. Inside the beautiful clubhouse, the lockers are large and of an expensive wood. After exiting the 18th hole you head up a slight hill to the beautiful clubhouse and can sit on the veranda with a view of the entire course and enjoy a top-shelf drink. From there, back to the locker room, where the steam room is fit for a king, and the showers have those massive shower heads that replicate a rainforest shower. Yes, the only way to describe the Muttontown Club is sumptuous.

The bottom line on Muttontown. Is it a top 100 golf course? Not even close. Is it a really beautiful and relaxing golf course that is a joy to play and experience? No doubt.
