Guest Guru: Brad Richards
Today we’re talking a little hockey. And we’re trying to keep it positive amidst the NHL’s latest work stoppage. Labor disputes are the worst part of sports (see: NFL replacement refs saga). Hopefully the league and its players will step into a room, lock the doors, order some chinese food and knock this thing out (editor’s note: no chance).
That said, it wasn’t too long ago – just a few short months – that today’s Guest Guru was bringing hope to our Fair City, leading our beloved Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals. Brad Richards – last offseason’s most coveted free agent – turned down more lucrative deals to sign with the Blueshirts, thinking the team was close winning the Cup. He wasn’t wrong. The team fell short of playing in the Cup Finals in heartbreaking fashion, losing to the Devils in double-OT in Game 7. Along the way, however, Brad would tally 6 goals and 9 assists in 20 playoff games. The 11-year NHL veteran is no stranger to stepping up in big spots; he was the MVP of the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning the whole damn thing with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With some time on his hands, we were able to hear some more about Brad’s abilities with another type of stick. He’s a voracious golfer and by his own admission, ain’t too shabby. See his answers below.
Other things you should know about Brad: he is a wine aficionado, dated a gorgeous actress (no big deal), and most importantly, is incredibly philanthropic. Case in point, the Brad Richards Foundation’s upcoming “Wines of the World” event at Hotel Chantelle here in New York on October 2nd. The foundation and Brad’s event support pediatric hospitals and kids with cancer. It will be a night of celebrities, wine tasting and great food for an amazing cause. Here’s a link to buy a ticket.
